About the Large Collector

"Wow." That invariably is what collectors woud say when we hung this work of art for them in a viewing room in the Beverly Hills gallery where I worked in 1982. The sheet itself is 60" long and in a frame it's well over six feet.

This is the widest serigraph that was produced of Nagel's work. Measuring five feet in length, the work of art is just staggering when framed and on the wall.

Collectors Gallery was a small gallery in Pacific Grove, California, which is a tiny community on the ocean just north of toney Carmel. They were an early supporter of Nagel's work and one that was apparently approached by Mirage to share in the expense of their own poster. We don't recall which of them came first, whether the smallish poster, or this, the large version of the same image. A brilliant piece of design using complementary shapes and iconography -- note the use of the model's hair which suggests the graceful line of the Cypress tree, a hallmark of that part of the California Coast. We are brokering this serigraph on behalf of a client.

This is the original, limited edition, signed by Nagel himself in pencil, in a small edition size.

ABOUT THE NAGEL LIMITED EDITIONS

The limited edition graphics, only 20 titles in all, were created in extremely small editions sizes. The amounts varied with each image but averaged around 100 s/n prints, plus proofs. There were never any unsigned states or iterations and the printer's proofs and artist proofs were jealously guarded. In the world of rare posters, these would be considered posters "Without Letters". While that's not exactly applicable to these since the term normally refers to an exact same poster printed before the type was printed on; these, instead were deliberately designed without typography. Some of the images were also used for the smaller lifetime posters. Confusing? You bet...

A Word to Those New to Nagel

You will notice there is huge difference in price on Nagel's work. This is especially true on eBay where you'll see things for as little as $20. Those prints are open edition, off-set lithographs and in some cases, are copies of famous Nagel images. Some are knock-offs or even outright fakes
The 'real' Nagel collectible art -- i.e., graphics and posters released during Nagel's life -- you rarely see, but they can bring prices in three and four figures. CAVEAT EMPTOR: Although many of the Nagels you see on eBay are correct, there is also an awful lot of misrepresentation (some of it is admittedly inadvertant) and fraudulent listings. Be careful if you're thinking of spending any serious money. For more on that subject,
