About the Playboy 30th

When this image was released, it was an official alignment between Nagel, his publisher, Mirage Editions and Playboy to commemorate the magazine's 30th Anniversiary in 1983. Approximately 1000 of the 2500 unsigned prints were made available through Playboy Magazine. They made it known that they would be selling the thousand pieces for $50. each. We heard there were several hundred thousand requests for them creating a firestorm in the gallery system, who were only given the balance of the 1500 UNSIGNED POSTERS.

The Playboy brought big money almost immediately on the secondary market. A great image, only Nagel would have the nerve to allow the model's head to protrude out of the border of the design (something he was famous for).

We met the model -- a blond, curiously -- some months later, when she came into Galerlie Michael, the gallery where I was working in Century City.

A Word to Those New to Nagel

You will notice there is huge difference in price on Nagel's work. This is especially true on eBay where you'll see things for as little as $20. Those prints are open edition, off-set lithographs and in some cases, are copies of famous Nagel images. Some are knock-offs or even outright fakes
The 'real' Nagel collectible art -- i.e., graphics and posters released during Nagel's life -- you rarely see, but they can bring prices in three and four figures. CAVEAT EMPTOR: Although many of the Nagels you see on eBay are correct, there is also an awful lot of misrepresentation (some of it is admittedly inadvertant) and fraudulent listings. Be careful if you're thinking of spending any serious money. For more on that subject,
