Sculpture
Shortly before
Pat's death, in an effort to get in on the raging popularity of Erté sculpture, Mirage announced
the release of these two wonderful bronzes. They were proofed and were to be produced by the same foundry
in Los Angeles that was producing the Ertés.
They were a natural extension of Pat's brilliance and had he lived, I'm sure he would have gone on to authorize many such sculptures.
from Todd: "As I recall, there were quite a few problems with the production aspects and I don't believe the entire editions were ever cast. Edition sizes were to be in the neighborhood of 400 each (I believe).
With "Carol" the earrings on the model were actually silver and dangled down tantalizingly — but they came off easily and, at least in the case of our gallery, got lost or stolen. Wtih Standing Lady, the model herself would come loose from the marble base. Mirage was having trouble solving these problems at the time of Pat's death, and I assume the project kind of lost its steam after that.
I'm not sure anyone really knows how many of
these are actually in existence. Frankly, I'm fairly
convinced
(in my own mind) that someone else fabricated the macquettes for these, using Patrick's designs. I do
not know for sure, but I'm guessing it was probably Misha Frid, the sculptor who, (again, I think), probably
did the same thing for the Ertés.
