1982 Interview with Nagel and Todd Bingham
From Todd: "In 1981,
I partnered with a good friend, the late Michael Craven, to produce and moderate a modest television
series about the business side of the art business entitled, 'Artistry'. Craven was the producer/videographer
and I lined up various professionals from the art business and acted as the moderator. Our hope
was of selling the series to PBS (this was long before even cable) — which we were unfortunately unable
to do. But the series was extremely well-received by art schools, colleges and university libraries
across the country.

Of the 13 episodes we did between 1981 and 1989, the one with Patrick Nagel is, of course, the most compelling. Shot in Sept. of 1982, just 18 months before his death, the interview turned out to be only one of three such pieces of video known to exist with Nagel. The interview was originally released on VHS and was admittedly very modest in production value (we were broke at the time). But because of the scarcity of material on Nagel and thanks to the kindess of one of our collectors, we do have it available now on DVD.
With the passing years, I have begun to feel even that much more priviledged than I did then, to have had the opportunity to interview this titan of the Art World. In the future, when the academicians start lionizing Nagel and his work, which I believe is inevitable (they are already calling him the Toulous-Lautrec of the 1980's) , it will be exciting to know that I played a small part in it."
BTW, as a special bonus, the DVD also features the 30 minute interview I did with Jeff Wasserman, of Wassmerman Silkscreen, Nagel's serigrapher for most of the early prints he did. A fascinating discussiion of fine art printmaking.
